Waterfall 5K / 10K Trail Runs

The 2022 Waterfall 5K/10K TAKE PLACE on JUNE 12, 2022 – two days before Flag Day.

Race start is 8:30 am at the Hominy Ridge Lake parking area.

We look forward to a 2022 race when the coronavirus threat has eased.  Know that we are planning for your safety and our volunteers’ safety.  There will be a few contingencies which we will send to confirmed entries as we get closer to the event.  So, plenty of sanitizer, the opportunity for handwashing with soap and water.  And a somewhat different take on the cookout that has traditionally accompanied the event.

The 2020 race was a model for other events going forward as to safety in this changed atmosphere.  This has traditionally been a smaller event among those that Veep Races manages but 2020 saw a record number of participants. So, the participation cap will be strictly followed.

The 2020 race had one challenge we could not anticipate – downed trees from a straight line storm (and perhaps, some rotation) three days before the race.  But race day was sunny, the temperatures were moderate and the air was soft.  The new start and finish at the Observation Mound was well received. A large green area for social distancing, an easier to find location, new restrooms and a large amount of parking space.

The 2021 race has a different challenge – reconstruction of parts of the Salamonie Dam. This led us to have the race start and finish near the historic 1937 Civilian Conservation Corps pavilion at Hominy Ridge Lake.  That opened up more of the trail to see and experience.

COVID considerations led us to have individual servings of ice cream from the Ice Cream Vault of Andrews, Indiana; the ice cream proved to be popular.

5K and 10K races are on the trails of the Salamonie State Forest. The site has numerous waterfalls and is one of Indiana’s true natural treasures. You may even see a bald eagle swooping across the water of the Salamonie River.

The refreshments have changed. In 2020 we had gourmet sandwiches safely distributed; in 2021 we had Ice Cream Vault of Andrews gourmet ice cream.  In 2022 the choice will be made closer to race (and that choice may be having both).

The latitude and longitude for the start at Hominy Ridge Lake is: 40.808045112091484, -85.6828868731689. You can print a pdf map of Hominy Ridge Lake here.

There will be ‘morning-of’ registration at the Hominy Ridge Lake parking area. We are now taking credit cards for ‘day-of’ registration. You may pay ‘day-of’ by credit card, cash or check. If you have the Square ‘Wallet’ – you may pay by your Square smartphone app.

We congratulate ACRES Land Trust on the action of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources in December of 2014 to officially dedicate Kokiwanee as a statutory nature Preserve. One of the protective restrictions as a nature preserve means that it is limited for recreational purposes. So, starting in 2015, the Waterfall Trail Runs shifted to the trails of the Salamonie State Forest on the south side of the Salamonie River. We appreciate ACRES Land Trust and their protection of the bluffs of the Salamonie contained in Kokiwanee.

Testimonials from the 2011 race:

I just wanted to say Thanks! again for all your work on the run yesterday.  This was my first trail run and was a great experience all around.  The event and camaraderie made for a terrific Sunday morning.
